When we visited Amsterdam earlier this year we were lucky enough to visit the 'All the Rembrandts' exhibit at the Rijksmuseum and it was stunning. Rembrandt was able to capture every detail in his paintings and capture light, life and moods with a few quick lines in his etchings. One of the notable elements from this collection was the number of self-portraits which captured his likeness in perpetuity.

Rembrandt Square (Rembrandtplein) also shows snapshots from a time gone by but from further back in the Early Carboniferous around 358.9 to 346.7 Million Years Ago. The blue stone paving slabs are a common sight across Amsterdam and are used to line the curbs of many streets across the city.
The 'blue stone' paving Rembrandt Square is 'Kilkenny Black Marble' (Not marble but a fine-grained micritic limestone) and contains large numbers of fossilised brachiopods (up to 10cm in size) and tabulate corals which stand out in white against the background dark grey.
These fossils were deposited in a warm shallow sea basin that covered most of Western Europe. Life would have flourished with corals and crinoids (sea lilies) filter feeding from the water column and below them brachiopods (which anchor themselves to the seafloor) filter feeding lower down. This shows the abundance of organic matter which is present in the limestone, the decay of which gave it its characteristic colour. Gastropods would also have been present and can be found in some places. The calcium carbonate that formed the limestone came from the skeletons of microscopic creatures called foraminifera which died and formed a type of lime mud on the seabed. These tiny creatures would have lived in the water column and been an essential food source for filter feeders like the crinoids.
